The Sacred Monsters
by Jean Cocteau
Melodrama about the theatre

“Our admirers do not dare go behind the scenes. This is their greatest mistake!”, Esther the actress confides in a young theatre-goer…
We can say the same: the theatre is open! It’s wide open! It’s uncovered! Every time the curtain is raised, the theatre makes itself open offering revelation. Welcome to our bizarre world where everything is artificial except feelings, passion, tears and laughter; where sincerity is the most valuable currency; where a good man is a profession.
Listening to Jean Cocteau’s advice he gave the first producers in 1939, we perform the play irrelevant to any specific epoch or country. The play is about actors. The play is about openness and sincerity – the only way of talking to the audience. The play is full of optimism, for we love happy ends.
